It is made in two action sizes only: 12 and 20. It had a few teething troubles with its single trigger but these have long since been sorted. The Sporting model was introduced to be a little more attainable its base price is roughly half that of the Royal. It restarted with a new design in the Nineties. The mechanics were improved in the Fifties but production of the old Royal over-and-under ceased circa 1960. It made 26 guns of this configuration before the Second World War. Holland and Holland has done a lot of work developing the modern British over-and-under. If I were looking for a way to criticise it would be that the lines of the sideplated action are a little square but improved by bolsters.Īlthough hand-finished and carrying extra engraving, the Holland and Holland Sporting Deluxe was originally designed for CNC manufacture following the example set by Italian firms such as Fabbri and Perazzi. The decoration of the Holland and Holland Sporting Deluxe is close to my ideal, and the general form and specification hard to fault. In the latter case, you will see two straight tubes that have been expertly struck-up externally and are blemish-free inside and out. Exploring the action machining or looking down the demi-lump barrels will not disappoint, either. The barrel blacking is lustrous, the wood is expertly chequered by hand and traditionally oiled. The gun has character combined with best London finish. The metalwork is beautifully presented and wood-to-metal fit is impeccable. The general form is exceptionally graceful.

The rifling, bore diameter and finish all matches up to perfection and should not affect the accuracy of the rifle and, as noted, it is not very visible either. This gun is priced low to allow a buyer to put a nice Holland & Holland into their collection that does not mind a few flaws, the most notable being the sleeving of the last 6 ½” of the barrel that was done so well I did not notice it for almost a week. 22LR came along, the popularity of the Rook rifle took a tumble, so few were made after 1910. Still a gorgeous example of one of Holland’s oddities from the turn of the century. There are few found that have not been restored or modified in some way, and this gun is no exception. Ammunition is difficult to find, but can be handloaded, as there is information for such all over the internet. The wood is sound, the screws are excellent, and the 26” barrel has strong rifling and light frosting throughout. This gun has been restored and nicely done. There is even nice engraving as a band around the breech of the barrel and all of the screws are nicely engraved as well. This is the most refined of the bunch with the rounded action, hammerless design, finely figured English walnut, nicely checkered, engraved with fine English scroll, including the grip cap and steel butt plate. They made several versions of these fine little rifles, some with hammers, some without. Holland & Holland made the “ROOK RIFLE” in fairly large numbers (around 5000 or so) for the purpose of hunting small game and killing rooks, a crow-like bird native to Great Britain and at time quite a pest of a bird.
